grow your life, change your world

What we've got for men

Church doesn't always seem friendly for men. (We understand that. We're men.)

We don't want to ask for directions. We don't want to look dumb. We want to know that it's okay to laugh and to talk and to not know all the answers and to do something constructive and to just watch what's happening.

So here's what we do.

We eat.

We've got breakfast on the second Saturday of every month. Some of the guys show up early to make food. Always something hot. Usually something spicy, too. Eggs, potatoes, gravy, stuff like that. There's a basket for donations to cover the food.

We eat. We sing (with low voices). We listen to someone talk about their life and how God is working. Usually the speaker acknowledges the questions we have the challenges of being real, being honest, measuring up.

There are usually about twenty guys with a mixture of ages.

We learn about being men.

In 2008 we started a new thing called "Men's Fraternity." Actually, we didn't make it up. Some guys in Atlanta did. They knew that guys really want to understand how to be better husbands, better dads, better men...but we don't want a lot of pressure and we don't want to be put on the spot. (You can read more about the program by following this link.)

Two groups will be in the first year study, "the quest for authentic manhood." About half of each meeting is watching a video. The other half is talking in a smaller group about what was just said. There's a workbook with questions that are helpful and can be answered.

Two groups will be in the second year study, "Winning at work and home."

Sometimes the questions can be pretty probing. But because this is happening with a group of guys who are trying to understand, it makes a great community of learning and growing.
